In one of the most powerful moments from the Wonder Woman film, we see her throw herself in front of two children to shield them from a tank. It’s a striking image of courage — a warrior using all her strength not to destroy, but to protect.

For many parents and caregivers who’ve experienced trauma, that scene hits close to home. We spend our lives trying to protect our children from the pain we once endured. We want to make sure they never have to feel what we felt — the fear, the neglect, the loneliness, the shame.

But protection alone can only go so far.Sometimes the greatest act of protection is healing ourselves.

Healing as a Form of Protection

When we carry unhealed wounds from childhood — abuse, neglect, or emotional abandonment — they don’t simply disappear when we grow up. They live in our nervous systems, our reactions, and our relationships. Without realizing it, we can pass that pain forward, even when our intentions are full of love.

By choosing to heal, we interrupt that cycle. We begin to respond instead of react. We learn to soothe instead of shut down.We offer connection instead of fear.

Healing our own trauma creates safety not just within us, but within our families. It allows our children to grow up in an environment that feels more secure, more emotionally available, and more whole.

The Gift of Healing

The most valuable gift we can give our children isn’t perfection — it’s transformation. When we choose to face our own history of abuse or neglect with compassion and courage, we model what real strength looks like.

Just like Wonder Woman, our healing isn’t about being invincible — it’s about being brave enough to protect through vulnerability, love, and growth.

Healing yourself is protecting your children.
